The Good Hope School has been awarded a Virgin Islands Energy Office (VIEO) Discretionary Grant. The project, entitled, "Solar Lighting: Protecting Our Operations and Environment," is twofold; it will provide needed security lights on the campus while improving the turtle nesting happening on Good Hope beaches. Through light modifications including specialized bulbs, placement of lights and configurations the security lights will not interfere with the nesting habitat. The Good Hopes School has had limited security lighting in the past to protect the turtles. This grant allows the school to increase security, preserve turtle nesting, and increase efficiency with solar power.
Michael Mongeau, Head of School states "we are striving to become a model school of energy efficiency and conservation using our many natural resources, this grant allows us to demonstrate balance in our environment and operations." The project is expected to kick-off late summer and once completed will give students the opportunity to use the project in case studies in marine and environmental science classes.
VIEO's Discretionary Grant Program encourages and aims to expand energy efficiency/renewable energy projects through competitive grant-seeking proposals. It seeks to fund these types of projects that benefit the entire community, or a significant percentage of the population.
The school will be partnering with Sustainable Systems & Design International (SSDI) to see the project through fruition. SSDI is a leading environmental engineering firm in the US Virgin Islands. |
