Curriculum

English

In each grade, students are encouraged to develop a love of reading through an English program that prepares them to be competent readers and writers, effective listeners, and confident speakers. They are exposed to a wide variety of books, experiences, and ideas that promote a love of literature, the ability to think critically, and a life-long quest for knowledge.

Mathematics

Students are provided with interesting and relevant problems to think about, concrete materials to work with, and opportunities to find relationships among mathematical concepts. Mathematical understanding is the main aim, not just speed and accuracy in technique. By encouragement of experimental work, where the students observe, record, and evaluate for themselves, they are provided with the raw materials that shape their numerical thinking. The Lower School math program develops computational skills, problem-solving abilities, and a conceptual view of mathematics.

Science

Science is taught through the development of thematic units organized around major concepts that are meaningful and relevant to the students' lives. The source and use of energy, the concept of the life cycle and the inevitability of change are explored in relation to all topics. Information takes place in a climate of inquiry; observing, investigating, collecting data, gathering information, problem solving, revising and rethinking. Hands-on experiments are a part of every unit. Units in life, physical, earth and space science are studied at each level. Environmental science and marine biology are important parts of the curriculum at The Good Hope School.

Social Studies/History/Geography

Much of the work centers around diversity and topics of interest that arise from the students. An ongoing focus of the program is the development of good social relationships, building a sense of community and caring for each other. Some specific goals and objectives include:

  • developing respect for the past and preparation for the future;
  • learning the traditions and legends behind the celebration of certain holidays;
  • providing exposure to various cultures and developing an understanding of and respect for differences in people;
  • developing awareness of present day current events; and
  • developing decision-making skills.

Foreign Language

Due to the proximity of St. Croix to various Spanish-speaking islands and the large Hispanic population on the island, emphasis is given to the study of the Spanish language.

In Lower School, the Spanish program is geared toward creating an informal, non-threatening environment where students can acquire a basic Spanish vocabulary for immediate use. Oral communication and comprehension are emphasized while reading and writing skills are added later. Lessons are closely tied to the students' interests. Games, songs, and art activities are used to generate confidence and to encourage the use of Spanish as a means of communication.

Computers

Beginning with Kindergarten, students learn to use computers to enhance their learning experiences.  Computer skills are taught in the context of all disciplines, and technology serves as an important tool for learning across the entire curriculum. A well-equipped computer lab is dedicated to Lower School student use.

Art

Art is integrated across the curriculum. The art program has a broad base, involving students in as many media as possible. They work in drawing, coloring, painting, clay modeling, collage, origami, mask making, story shadow boxes and many others. Each successive year the projects become more varied. Creative self-expression is encouraged.

Music

The music department is strong and offers a variety of opportunities that balance the academic and technical with the aesthetic and emotional, the discipline with the joy. In Lower School, students sing, engage in creative movement, play the recorder, and learn music notation.

Cooking

Cooking reinforces all aspects of the curriculum in the lower grades: measurement and counting, social studies and reading. Students enjoy the results of these cooking projects.

Physical Education

Because physical development complements academic learning, physical education receives due emphasis in all grades at Good Hope.

Lower School students have gym class three days a week. Youngsters begin with the fundamentals of movement and basic physical fitness through rhythmical activities, circle games, exercises, and swimming.

Library

The Ward M. Canaday Memorial Library, with its full-service media center, is a central part of student life at Good Hope. Library staff work closely with students and faculty, augmenting classroom reading instruction and teaching research and computer skills.

The library program in the early years is investigative in nature, and involves learning what a library is and how to use it as a place of enjoyment and relaxation, as well as learning.

Enrichment/Resource

A unique Enrichment / Resource program services students in grades K-5. It provides in-depth learning opportunities based on students' personal interests. Small groups are also formed as the need arises in all subject areas for advanced students and for those needing individual instruction or additional exposure outside the classroom.

After School Extended Day Program

Lower School students may become involved in clubs and additional activities. There is also after care provided until 5:30 p.m. at an additional fee.
