The Middle School program, grades 6-8, addresses the special needs of early adolescents and is a transitional period between the child-centered approach of the Lower School and the college preparatory, curriculum-based emphasis of the Upper School .
After mastering the skills of the primary years, students are ready to develop further their study and time management skills. The Middle School seeks to develop students' capacity for abstract thinking and provide them with the interpersonal and academic skills to be successful at the Upper School . Good Hope provides a positive school climate that is supportive, but that has high expectations for each individual Middle School student.
The Middle School has a challenging curriculum that utilizes varied instructional practices and assessments that promote learning. The courses are departmentalized, to give specialized instruction in each of the subjects with increased academic rigor. Our core academic program encourages and fosters critical thinking skills. Ethical behavior, leading a healthy life, and developing students who assume the responsibilities as a member of our global society are affective aspects of the program that are stressed.
Courses such as math, science, English, and social studies are taught by separate teachers with interdisciplinary units throughout the year. Students' exposure to language is increased with the continuation of Spanish and the introduction of French. And, students continue to develop their skills and abilities in technology, athletics, and the arts with required course such as choir, band, physical education, studio art, and computer skills. There are opportunities for individuals to work ahead in fields of special interest and ability. For example, 8th graders who wish to accelerate are able to take Algebra I and Introduction to Physical Science. The Middle School curriculum focuses as much on how to learn as on subject mastery.
