The Good Hope Lower School held its' first assembly of the New Year on Wednesday, January 25 th . The morning began with a brief welcome by Mrs. Layton, the Director of Lower School, who thanked the Lower School community for their participation in TV Turn off Week. The Lower School kicked off the academic year with TV Turn off Week last September and has made it a bi-annual event to kick off each semester of the year. Mrs. Layton continued by announcing that on Tuesday, the second grade had a stellar record of twenty out of twenty-one students turning off the TV! Mrs. Layton encouraged families to think of their brain as a muscle that needs to be exercised and stimulated. Mrs. Layton told the group, "Sedentary lifestyles do not allow students to grow a strong brain."
The first performance in the assembly was by the Yoga Dance Club. The students gave a demonstration of the yoga moves they learned during their first semester. Positions such as the sun salutation and traditional asanas (postures) were choreographed into movement sequences and set to music. Next, the Main Campus Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten followed the Yoga dancers with a song about responsibility. The second graders sang, "Teaching Peace," emphasizing that we all can help spread peace, "one by one in our work and our play." They recited a poem about Martin Luther King's life and impact on the world.
The assembly concluded with the Fourth Grade's presentation on The Chinese New Year. In the Chinese calendar, this is 4703, the year of the dog. Students explained the significance of an animal for each year, discussed the lore behind dragons, and spoke of traditions that the Chinese hold as they send out the old New Year and let in the new. At the end of the presentation, the fourth grade class came out with a human dragon chain and, in the Chinese tradition, led a rousing, noisy parade around campus!
Good Hope invites the public to attend any or all of the events on campus. Please call 772-0022, ext 176, for more information.
