The Good Hope School invites the general public to the events marking the celebration of Black History during the month of February. This tradition began in 1926 when the distinguished historian, author, editor, publisher, and Harvard Scholar Dr. Carter G. Woodson, organized a Negro History Week in order to bring the contributions of African Americans to the forefront. Over the century this week has grown into a month long celebration.

Patricia Swan, history instructor, said, "As a History Department, we are opposed to setting aside just one month for the study of Black History, but we see the continued inadequacies in our textbooks. Until we open a survey history textbook for US History with the histories of all peoples woven in with those of the majority, we will continue to emphasize the importance of Black contributions.  We will honor Black History with a celebration as one would celebrate a birthday."

The kickoff event was Monday, February 6 with dancing and drumming by Good Hope School students, Lamin and Zariah Jackson, Muhammad Shabazz, Sterling Gaston, and Chahney Hinds. The entire GHS community joined in the celebration of African music and dance with some of the students on stage learning African dance steps. The group also provided information on the origins of the musical instruments as well as the significance of the dances.

Weekly Brown Bag lunch discussions are planned with community leaders who will talk on different themes.  The topics range from contributions of Blacks to education, business, literature, and science to local legislative contributions.

The Schedule of Events is as follows: Monday, February 13 th, 12:15PM Middle School Conference Room: Poetry Reading with Dr. Roberta Knowles, Professor Emerita of The University of the Virgin Islands; Wednesday, February 22 nd, 12:15PM Middle School Conference Room: Legislative Contributions with Ms. Anne Golden; Tuesday, February 28 th, 11:25AM in the James C. Savage Performing Arts Center: Music of the African Diaspora with the "GHS Moms and Guests."

Good Hope invites the public to attend any or all of the events on campus.  Please call 772-0022, ext 176, for more information.
