The Good Hope School's elementary soccer team wins the St. Croix Interscholastic Association's Soccer League championship! This year makes the third year in a row for Good Hope's elementary team to obtain the championship title. "Despite their winning streak the team remained focused and challenged for the entire season, which lead to the teams' victory," noted Coach Dion Christopher. The elementary team practiced Monday through Thursday each week and spent a lot of free time, according to players, studying the game of soccer at home on the internet and practicing with friends and family.
The championship game was played on Tuesday, May 8, 2007, at The Good Hope School's soccer field. The Good Hope Falcons played Country Day Tigers for a win one to zero. The Good Hope team remained undefeated. Coach Christopher commented, "Country Day was a tough opponent from the beginning of the season to the end." The schools went head to head twice before this championship game, with ties, one to one, and zero to zero; making this game extremely exciting to all spectators.
The team's coach attributed their season's success to the player's teachable demeanor and practice habits. Jake Buckley, a Good Hope 5th grade student, scored the wining goal on Tuesday. Buckley started the season as a Goal Keeper and finished as Striker, which was indicative of the team's progress over the season. "All 15 players showed tremendous improvement," said Coach Christopher.
The winning game will be celebrated at the school's annual sports banquet on Friday night where athletes from each divisions and sport are acknowledged in front of family and friends. The team however, had a lively celebration following their win, and in sportsman tradition, soaked their coach with a cooler full of water.
The Good Hope School's Athletic Mission is to develop 'mens sana in corpore sano' (a sound mind in a sound body). They aim to build up scholar-athletes who commit to their teams, act with integrity, and compete with sportsmanship, character and pride. Through the St. Croix Interscholastic Athletic Association Good Hope provides a full range of interscholastic activities for those students who like to compete against other schools. The following are the activities in which Good Hope participates: soccer, volleyball, golf, basketball, softball, and tennis. |
