The TMARC (Temple Minority Access to Research Careers) program provides gifted minority high school students from all over the country the opportunity to gain biomedical research experience by working with established university scientists.
Three Good Hope Students, Lauren Lewis (8 th grade), Amaris Vasquez (8 th grade) and Leah Guthrie (9 th grade) attended the TMARC Program in Philadelphia this past summer. The students were originally accepted to the program through tests, essays, and interviews. All three young scholars were invited back next year to continue in the program.
During the 6 - 12 week summer program, 7 th and 8 th graders work in a classroom- based environment to build a foundation in cutting-edge research skills. From 9 th grade through the senior year of college, each student works closely with a PhD. science researcher in a participating medical research center.
Throughout the summer, each student researches a specific disease or condition of their choosing and presents a final research paper and PowerPoint presentation. This past summer, Lauren Lewis researched diphtheria; Amaris Vasquez studied small cell lung cancer; and Leah Guthrie chose autism as her area of study. On weekends, the participants visited various nearby college campuses such as Haverford College , Swathmore College , the University of Pennsylvania , and Bryn Mawr College .
Each of the GHS students gained a lot from their experiences at Temple University and would like to continue spending their summers in the TMARC program through college. They returned to Good Hope with important life skills such as time management and self - responsibility. "Everybody studied very hard but we had a lot of energy and a lot of fun." |
