The Buccaneer Tennis Club was busy this week ( November 1-4, 2007) with members of the St. Croix community playing tennis to benefit the faculty development fund at The Good Hope School. George Ashley Architects & Associates., PC, Network Architects, and The Buccaneer sponsored this annually anticipated event, celebrating its Fifteenth year.

The Calcutta Tennis Tournament at The Buccaneer began on Tuesday evening, members of the Board of Trustees, parents, faculty, and other supporters of the School, as well as St. Croix tennis enthusiasts, gathered at the Mermaid Restaurant at a cocktail party sponsored by The Buccaneer, and bid on the various teams playing mixed doubles. Don deWilde and Les Kelley acted as the auctioneers. Through bids and sponsorships, as well as an auction award that was returned to support the school by Stephanie Fletcher, over $21,000 was raised for The Good Hope School Faculty Fund. These funds assist in supporting the school's esteemed faculty in training and other activities that enrich the lives of Good Hope students.

Sue Gibbons and Les Kelley were the winners against Shane Dalton and Jolynn Grace in the main draw, 6-4, 7-6. This match included two players, Les Kelley and Jolynn Grace, who were substitutes from the original draw. The tournament included 32 teams; partners were drawn out of a hat. In the Consolation Round Lisa Galiber and Jeff Sanford won against Lisa Borden and Dion Johnson. Their match ended at 6-4, 7-5. Both Lisa Galiber and Jeff Sanford are former Good Hope students.

Don deWilde and Wendy Davy at The Buccaneer Tennis Club, and Sara Petievich, a Good Hope parent, generously contributed their time and expertise for this event.  Winners were awarded student art work that had been chosen by artist-in-residence and art teachers, Phyllis Biddle and Pedra Chaffers, and framed by Gallows Bay Frame Shop.  The first place female winner was given the St. Croix tennis bracelet designed by Whealan Massicott of ib designs.
