The Good Hope School is celebrating their art students featured on the "Kids Creating For Kids" Court Appointed Special Advocates of the Virgin Islands' (CASA) holiday cards. The Good Hope School has regularly had artists selected to represent CASA in their holiday card competition; however, this year is special with Good Hope students featured on six of the ten single illustrator holiday cards.
CASA's Gail Shearer commented that this year, new corporate orders have been placed that will most likely increase sales. One large company selected Moko Jumbies, by Cory Bishop '09, as their corporate greeting card, ordering 2,000 copies. Gail indicated that Moko Jumbie artwork usually is a best seller and appreciates this year's Moko artwork for spectacularly capturing the intricacy of the madras. She noted that their three person office sells nearly 25,000 cards for the holidays and that it is an inspiring and touching show of community that makes it possible. From the printing and shipping, to folding, so many businesses, schools, and individuals are taking part in the effort to help raise funds for CASA through this project.
Every fall the students at Good Hope are encouraged to create a card design and submit it for selection by CASA. The Good Hope School is proud to be involved; and in their submission efforts are lessons and discussion to ensure the students not only present their best quality, but embrace the idea of being a component of this joint effort to ultimately help children in need. Good Hope artists featured in this year's CASA cards include Cory Bishop '08, Julia Kimble '10, Dane Stewart '08, Julia Julien '09, Ahlam Yousef '09, and former student Leah Ferdschneider '07.
Additionally,
The "Family Tree" greeting card has a collection of artwork from 10 students, 5 of them are Good Hope Students: Joy Latty, Hannah Schuck, Deidra Matthew, Andrew Gryce, and Russell Armstrong. The Good Hope Art Program is directed by artist-in-residence and Upper School Art Teacher, Ms. Phyllis Biddle. Ms. Biddle, an accomplished artist, has led many of her students to win the Congressional Art Show as well as to gain acceptance in leading art colleges across the nation. Ms. Biddle has received, in the past, the CASA Angel for her faithful work on the "Kids Creating For Kids" project.
___________________________________________________________________ A commitment to the success of each child anchors the mission of The Good Hope School. Central to this belief is a shared dedication to excellence. The educational program provides a rigorous college preparatory curriculum that guides a student's ability to think critically, creatively, independently, and globally.
CASA helps and advocates for abused and neglected children. Knowing children can easily fall through the system, CASA serves children in court and with government and private service providers. "We exist to be the Voice of the Child". This strong statement is a service of love and devotion to each child who comes under the service of CASA. Since 1994 CASA of the VI has been providing services on St. Croix . www.casavi.org ###
