On Monday, December 11, 2006, Henry Mark, class of '12, won The Good Hope School Spelling Bee.
This fall, a tourism scholarship was offered by The Good Hope School and an anonymous donor to a deserving student. The Good Hope School 's St. Croix Tourism Scholarship was awarded to a new incoming 7 th grade student with full tuition paid, renewable each year through graduation. Selection was based on academic performance, good citizenship, and the family's commitment to the economic growth of St. Croix. Henry Mark was the first choice of the committee to make the scholarship decision; and has become a strong student and active member of the school community.
The Good Hope Bee included 22 students. The winner, Henry Mark won by spelling the word forfeit . Runner-ups were Jasmin Buckley in 8th grade and, Osei Wallace in 7th grade. Mr. Jackson, the Middle School social studies teacher, and Ms. Chaffers, Lower and Middle School art teacher, were pronouncers. Mr. Buckley, the 5 th grade teacher, served as judge; Ms. Vela, Middle School English teacher, as the dictionary judge; and Mrs. Cedano, Director of Lower and Middle School, Mr. Mongeau, Head of School, and Ms. Sanford, school nurse, oversaw the event.
The Good Hope School winner will head to the St. Croix District Spelling Bee in February and will compete with the other school winners. The winner and other top spellers from the District Bee will head to the Territorial Bee in March. The students will compete with students from St. Croix, St. Thomas, and St. John. From there, the winner of the Territorial Bee will represent the territory at the 2007 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC in May.
Preparation for local spelling bees that meet the national Scripps guidelines for participation ensure contestants do not use the Pronouncer Guides so that all words are unrehearsed. The Good Hope School participates in the local bee each year and prepares students through their regular English curriculum.
